Focusing on the principle of REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, the Ecolid is currentlty the most environmentally friendly recycling product available in South Africa because:
  • Unlike other systems which replace existing bins, Ecolids are designed to fit the EXISTING units. This prevents the unnecesary wasteful act of disposing of the existing bins.
  • The lids are made from at least 50% recycled material and all measures are taken to lessen the impact on the environment in the manufacturing process.
  • As existing bins are used, the amount of material needed is significantly lower than any other system.
  • The lids are manufactured locally, stimulating our local market and creating employment.
The Ecolid was initially designed to aid seperation the the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) recycling system.
It facilitates UCT’s drive to go green with its greening programme, the Green Campus Initiative that aims to cut down on waste and reduce UCT’s carbon footprint.
Instead of purchasing new colour-coded bins for waste separation, the lids have been designed to fit the three EXISTING types of rubbish-bins used on UCT campuses. This saves over 350 functioning bins from being thrown away and turned into unnecessary waste.

The lids aid waste separation as each different lid colour and
opening shape indicate the type of waste to be thrown into each bin.
Red = tin, dark blue=paper, plastic = yellow and other = green.
The bins on UCT have been arranged into clusters of four, with one of each different colour lid. Each cluster forms a recycling station, with each station occurring approximately every 20 metres on campus.
The cost of the lids is significantly less than an entire new bin, and has a lower impact on the environment as far less material is used in its manufacture.
There is also a light blue lid for “glass” which is not found on campus as there is little to no glass waste generated there.
The cost of an Ecolid is nearly 10 x less than any other recycling solution available.

Eco Environmental Local Trades People Competition

In order to raise awareness of the Ecolid amongst local business in South Africa we are running a competition to see who can recycle the most and this month sees a local cleaner and plumber in Cape Town win the awards with a record total of 2.3 tonnes and 1.9 tonnes of recycled materials being processed by our winners below:

1st Prize
Our winner this month is Daniel Venter a Master plumber heading up a team of professionals servicing all of cape town. He was able to make sure that all the waste metal piping and plastic went to good use in our recycling bins. He said "Everyone needs to do their bit for the environment and even local business's can lend a hand and not just leave it to the big brands"
For more about Daniels green initiatives check out his heat pumps and solar geysers which they can also install-

Runner up Prize
This months runner up was Rob Muller who says he is one Cape Towns greenest Carpet Renewal technicians to you and me that's more commonly known as a carpet cleaner. Despite Rob's visons of grandeur he was an excellent eco warrior helping to recycle 1.9 tonnes of material for a great cause. Well done rob!
